ISU student first to receive Carver Fellowship doctorate

Antoine Alston will be the first to receive a Ph.D. degree as a part of Iowa State’s George Washington Carver Fellowship program.

Alston will receive his degree in agricultural education and studies during commencement Aug. 5.

The George Washington Carver Fellowship program was established in 1996 at Iowa State to give outstanding minority students an opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. degree.

It honors the late George Washington Carver, the first black student, graduate and faculty member at Iowa State.

There are currently five doctoral fellows involved in the program.

Alston attended North Carolina A&T State University.

He has also been appointed an assistant professor at North Carolina A&T State University.
