An ISU student died over the weekend, marking the third death of a student or former student since the summer session started.

Edward F. Wedge III, 19, died Saturday in Clinton after being swept away in a rush of flood waters while he was never the Mississippi River. Further details weren’t available at press time.

He was born July 20, 1980, to Edward and Barbara [Grawe] Wedge Jr. in Clinton. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1999 and had just finished his freshman year at Iowa State.

Wedge was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity when he attended Iowa State.

“It’s a terrible loss for the fraternity and the greek community,” said Brian Tenclinger, assistant dean of students and director of Greek Affairs.

“What was neat about him was that he was a quiet individual, but you can see the potential in him,” said Keith Sieren, president of Theta Delta Chi and senior in liberal arts.

Tenclinger said members of the greek community were expecting Wedge to evolve into a leadership position for his fraternity.

He also said Wedge’s death is another example to ISU students of how precious life is.

“Don’t take life for granted; don’t put yourselves in harm’s way.

“Our hearts really go out to Theta Delta Chi. We’re keeping them in our hearts and prayers,” he said.

Pete Englin, associate dean of students, said the deaths surrounding ISU during the past few weeks take their toll on the ISU community.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Englin said.

“Even though Iowa State’s a large community, it’s a very small community with relationships and connections.

“Our thoughts are with his family,” he said.

Survivors include Wedge’s parents; one sister, Becky; grandparents, June Wedge of Clinton and Joe and Alice Grawe of Waverly.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Clinton, and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. until the funeral.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church.
