Track teams conclude season at nationals
June 5, 2000
Daniel Kinyua finished up his outdoor track career at Iowa State as an all-American, while women’s sprinter Ola Adetiba was a near miss for the honor this past weekend at the NCAA national championship track and field meet.
Kinyua finished sixth in the 1500 meter run, with the top eight runners earning All-America honors.
His time of 3:41.26 was just off his season best time.
Kinyua entered the race ranked No. 4 in the nation.
The women were led by junior Ola Adetiba. Competing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Adetiba had two close calls.
She had a “whole meet of near misses,” assistant women’s coach Scott Roberts said.
In the 100 meter dash she finished 17th overall and did not qualify for finals.
Sprinters earn spots in the finals by being in the top 16, and Adetiba was .01 of a second from qualifying for finals with a time of 23.53 in the semifinals.
In the 200 meter dash Adetiba finished 12th overall, and was the ninth American finisher.
The top eight Americans, along with the top eight overall, earn all-American honors. Her time of 11.59 was just short of earning her the honor.
“For her first national championship [meet] she did a tremendous job,” Roberts said.
Another Cyclone that was close to being an all-American was sophomore Barbara Szlendakova. She finished ninth, one spot away, in the heptathlon.
Roberts pointed out that if she continues at this pace she will be an all-American next year as a junior.
She finished 10th at the meet last season.
Roberts said there are still a few things that Szlendakova needs to work on, and that he would be spending a lot of time with her improving in the javelin throw.
Other Cyclones that competed didn’t do as well as they expected, but Roberts points out that being at nationals for a first time can really throw people out of their rhythm.
First timer Zech Schiebout finished 19th out of 20 in the discus with a throw of 179-9′.
Schiebout had thrown over 180′ consistently all year, and looks to improve for next season.
Laurie Meythaler, another first timer also ran a time that was much lower than she would have liked. She ran a 4:39 in the 1500 meter run, and placed last in her heat.
Roberts said that getting to the national level is quite an achievement, and this will make the runners “more hungry for next year.”
Seven time all-American shot putter Jamie Beyer finished up his throwing career at Iowa State with a disappointing meet.
In the shot put he fouled on all three of his attempts and was unable to get a successful throw off.
High jumper Joey Brunkhorst also competed in the meet, but his event was delayed due to severe weather in North Carolina and results were unavailable.
While not all the athletes did as well as they would have liked, Roberts still has a positive outlook for both the men’s and women’s track teams because all but Beyer and Kinyua will return next season.
“You like to get underclassmen [to nationals] so they can get some experience,” Roberts said. Then they can perform better the next time.
