Pronouns gone bad

Matthew Greenley

The British apparently outdo Americans in journalism as well as gun control.

I applaud the column written by Gavin Salmon that appeared in the Iowa State Daily on Thursday.

Admittedly, I agree with every word he wrote. Just as important as the content however, Salmon’s column was grammatically correct and well-reasoned. He wrote at a collegiate level and with adequate support for an opinion article.

Erik Hoversten’s exposition provides another example of quality, thoughtful writing. His work gives a fun-to-read slant to both a wide variety of popular issues and topics of his own choice.

Compare with those articles the editorial titled “Smoking in Ames.”

Not only does this piece rest on loose assumptions, but it contains many pronoun errors despite being relatively short.

Although the opinion page lends itself to a more casual writing style, this blurb reads like a ninth grade English assignment.

May the Daily Editorial Board follow the lead of talented contributors for the improvement of its own writing.
