Regents discuss budget, new college

VINTON — The numbers for Iowa State’s lower-than-anticipated budget, which is down about $10 million from last year, will create negative repercussions for faculty members, said one member of the ISU administration during Wednesday’s Board of Regents meeting.
“Recruitment efforts for faculty will go down; class sizes will go up; there will be fewer classes offered, and some of the fringe benefits offered to faculty will go down,” ISU Provost Rollin Richmond said.
The budget was one of the top issues broached during the meeting.
Plans for renovating the Memorial Union were presented by ISU President Martin Jischke, who confirmed that ISU board members and the Government of the Student Body were “in the midst of discussion” about the plans, and they will continue to debate the idea.
“There is some consensus on the need for remodeling the first and second floors,” he said.
Board member Charles Wright brought up the importance of childcare for students and faculty in the recruitment and retention of students and staff.
Warren Madden, vice president for Business and Finance, said there are two childcare facilities at Iowa State. One, an older facility, is located on Pammel Court. It cares for about 78 children and is a nonprofit organization.
The second facility, which is located near the Veterinary Medicine College, is responsible for about 88 children and is managed by Bright Horizons Family Solutions Inc.
This center, in only its third year of operation, has been nationally recognized.
Talk also turned to the construction of Iowa State’s new College of Business facility.
Some concern was expressed by the regents because an architect from outside Iowa was selected to work on the construction of the College of Business building.
The Zimmer Gunsal Frasca Partnership from Seattle was contracted by Iowa State to do the construction.
Madden said he believed the Seattle firm was the right choice for Iowa State.
“After evaluating all of the criteria associated with this project for the proposed staffing, we have concluded and are recommending to you that this particular firm is the most qualified to do this particular kind of project,” he said.
