The men’s and women’s track and field teams had similar outings at the Big 12 Championships held in Missouri last week.
Both teams ended up placing eighth, each marking 45 points in the event.
The Cyclone men earned two second place finishes with Zach Scheibout in the discus and Daniel Kinuya in the 1,500 meter run.
The men’s 1,500 meter race was expected to be one of the highlights of the meet, and it certainly didn’t dissapoint.
Kinuya and Charlie Gruber from Kansas battled the entire way before the speedy Jayhawk edged Kinuya down the stretch.
“We kind of went out a little slow, and I wasn’t really expecting that,” Kinuya said. “Other than that I felt like everything went pretty well. Coach Bourke told me to stay relaxed and run and that is what I tried to do.”
Iowa State men’s coach Steve Lynn said many members on his team ran very well.
“We had several guys that really ran great and had lifetime bests in this meet, but we didn’t we couldn’t get it done. It really shows the strength of our conference,” Lynn said.
The women’s team was led by Aurelia Trywinaska, who placed second while setting an ISU school record in the 100 meter hurdles.
She also took second in the triple jump.
“I didn’t have that great of a start, but I set a school record so I’m pretty happy. In the triple jump I was just trying to stay focused and land a good jump. Hopefully my time in the hurdles will get me into nationals, but we’ll have to wait until next week to find out,” Trywinaska said.
Ola Adebita had two fourth-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
The honors rolled in for the track and field team following the conclusion of the season.
The ISU women’s track and field squad placed 15 members on the Academic All-Big 12 team with 11 earning first team recognition.
Iowa State’s men’s team was similarly decorated, as they had five people named to the first team, while four men made the second-team.
On the track, Iowa State’s Jamie Beyer, Joey Brunkhorst, Damon Lampley, John Sainna, Jason Vogel, Troy Weiland and Matt Williams all were honored as first team All-Big 12.
The women’s team placed 11 members on the first team, including Andrea Crapisi, Victoria Gunnarson, Olivia Mills, Christina Peterson and Julie Ollila.
The athletes will find out today if they will advance to the nation finals.
