Don’t take this!

To the editor:

The governor of Iowa is poised to authorize one of the most outrageous invasions of college student privacy in history.ÿIf Iowa college students and privacy advocates do not act swiftly by demanding a veto of House File 2437, then all Iowa colleges will be authorized to snitch to the parents of adult students under the age of 21 if they are determined by the school to have violated a law or school rule with respect to the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance. ÿ

Don’t take this! People between 18 and 21 are adults.ÿIt is their right to determine what to tell their parents, not the government’s!

The Board of Regents or any other university should not be allowed to treat adult students under the age of 21 like children to be tattled on by Big Brother.

The bill even calls for a study to be conducted to determine if snitching to your parents will improve your grades! House File 2437 has passed both houses and is on the governor’s desk awaiting his signature. ÿ

Call (515) 281-5211 and tell Governor Vilsack the government has no business sticking its nose between adult students and their parents. ÿÿÿ
