New IRHA execs take over tonight
April 19, 2000
Power will switch hands tonight as Inter-Residence Hall Association President-elect Tom Plagge and Vice president-elect Chris Benson take office.
“I’m looking forward to getting started on IRHA,” Plagge said. “This isn’t a really formal ceremony, and hopefully, it will be a smooth transition.”
IRHA Vice President Jeff Greiner said tonight’s IRHA meeting will be run like any other meeting, except he and IRHA President David Sims will give up their seats to Benson, Birch-Welch-Roberts representative, and Plagge, Richardson Court Association at-large representative.
“We’re going to go straight through roll call and during our officer reports, we’re going to give a review of year,” Greiner said. “[Then] I’ll hand the chair off to Chris and Dave [will do the same] to Tom, and they will take care of the rest of the legislation.”
Parliament members will be wrapping up the 1999-2000 session by voting on four bills.
The first proposes changes to the constitution that would allow associations such as Hawthorn Court and Buchanan Hall to join IRHA in the future.
Improving IRHA by changing the wording of some of its bylaws is the focus of another bill.
Dave Eilers, co-author of the bylaws bill, said at last week’s meeting the bill would make revisions such as requiring the IRHA secretary to type 50 words per minute, having the president and vice president stay in Ames during the summer and adding advertising to the secretary’s duties.
Wall paintings and decorations in residence halls will be affected if a House Personalization bill passes. The bill states the physical requirements of outdoor house signs, the procedure of painting and supplies and lead abatement.
Also, a 100-inning softball game may be financed by IRHA if the final bill passes. RCA officials asked IRHA to donate $1,500 to the event, which is hosted by RCA.
All of the proceeds from the April 29 fund-raiser will go to the American Heart Association.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in Chessman Lounge of Helser Hall.
