Film faux pas

Matthew Emerson

To the editor:

The Daily article about relocating the filing of “The Private Public” left me extremely disheartened.

This would have been a great opportunity for students and homegrown film makers to expose the nation to a university and a way of life outside contemporary media.

I believe the values and creativity of Iowans involved with this film would have brought a freshness and Midwestern grit to the cinema that is sorely lacking.

Let us hope the ISU administration will see the value of such exposure on its own merit: national exposure.

Should future opportunities arise, I pray the university will be more supportive of alumni and students trying to share their vision of Iowa State through film.

This is a magical place above a trademark, and it is too precious to require a permit to share.

This campus has had a profound, emotional impact on thousands of lives and has moved the spirits of many young people. The expansive central green, the rich tones of the Campanile, and the character of the antiquated buildings would be a special addition to any film.

I yearn for the possibility.

Until then, we are blessed with the few-but-positive SportsCenter sound bytes and “Becoming the Best” ads that would have made Joseph Goebbels puke. This is hardly adequate representation of such an endearing place.

Let us wish Mr. Calek and Mr. Holstein the best in their endeavors in Wayne, Neb. I am confident they will discover Wayne State pales in comparison with the beauty of our campus and lacks the charm and uniqueness of the Bells of Iowa State.
