Tennis team drops two

The ISU women’s tennis team dropped a pair of Big 12 Conference meets last weekend.

The Cyclones traveled to Oklahoma Saturday to take on the Sooners and lost 9-0. At Sunday’s matches the result was the same at 45th-rated Oklahoma State.

The losses drop the Cyclones to 6-13 on the season.

“Both teams we played are very good. Oklahoma State is 16-4 in the conference, so they’re a tough team. We had some good matches in both meets, and it was fun to play those teams,” said freshman Tara Goedjen.

In the loss to the Cowboys, the Cyclones only won sets in singles play came from Noortje Cornelissen and Tara Goedjen.

Goedjen lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Cameron Stoudt at No. 6 singles and Cornelissen fell 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to Maria Galoustova in No. 1 singles action.

“My opponent picked it up at the end of the match. The momentum was going back and forth and it happened to go her way at the end,” Goedjen said. “The match could’ve gone either way. I probably could’ve finished off the match in the second set, I was up 4-2.”

The Cyclones lost three hard fought matches in doubles against Oklahoma, but the Sooners cruised in singles play as Goedjen was the lone Cyclone to take a set.

Goedjen fell behind early and lost the first set 6-2, but battled back and took the second set 6-3.

“I started out slow, the score in the first set didn’t really tell how close a set it was,” Goedjen said. “I was nervous at the beginning, but once I got comfortable, I started playing better and won the second set.”

The third set was played in windy conditions and Goedjen switched sides on the court into the wind down 3-4. Goedjen dropped the last two games to lose the match.

The Cyclones return to action today, hosting Missouri at 3 p.m. for their final meet of the season.
