Former football players arrested

Three former ISU football players and one other man were arrested on drug charges Wednesday, police said.

Former ISU football players DeCarlos Anderson, 23, 4112 Westbrook Drive #22; Kenyatta Burris, 21, 3137 Turnberry Court #203; and Leonard Peel Jr., 20, 102 Linden Hall; as well as Damon Coleman 22, no permanent address, were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine early Wednesday morning.

The arrests took place after an ISU Department of Public Safety officer pulled Anderson over for speeding on Mortensen Parkway, said Jerry Stewart, associate director of DPS.

Burris was also charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and with unlawful use of a driver’s license, Stewart said.

None of the four individuals could be reached for comment Thursday.

Stewart said a DPS officer stopped Anderson’s 1994 green Ford Explorer for going 55 mph in a 40 mph zone on Mortensen Parkway east of State Street Wednesday at about 12:17 a.m. When the officer got near the vehicle, he believed he could smell the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the Explorer, Stewart said.

After a search of the individuals and of the vehicle, officers found two baggies containing a white powder, which tested positive for cocaine, and a blunt, a cigar wrapper filled with marijuana, Stewart said.

Stewart said neither Anderson nor any of his passengers claimed possession of the cocaine or the blunt, so a call was placed to a representative of the Story County Attorney’s Office, who advised officers to charge all four individuals with possession of both marijuana and cocaine.

Additionally, he said officers searching Burris found four baggies of packaged marijuana on his person, which led to his being charged with possession with intent to deliver.

Stewart said Burris, senior in sociology, also had a fake California driver’s license in his possession stating his name was James Woods and listing a false driver’s license number.

“The driver’s license number listed on the license was not found through a computerized California driver’s license check,” he said.

Stewart said Burris admitted the license was a fake.

All four individuals were transported to the Story County Jail in Nevada after their arrest.

A jail spokesman said Peel, sophomore in pre-business; Anderson, senior in liberal studies; and Burris were released Thursday morning after meeting with a judge. Coleman was released Thursday afternoon after posting a surety bond.

Burris was dismissed from the ISU football team late last season for violating team rules, said Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Tom Kroeschell. Kroeschell said Peel was also expelled from the team last year for violating team rules, and Anderson’s eligibility ran out after last season.

All four individuals face prison terms of up to 10 years and fines of up to $10,000 apiece if convicted.
