‘Family’ to be focus of 2000-01 ISU theme
April 24, 2000
Iowa State’s focus on the “Cyclone Family” will extend to the whole state next year.
After several months of deliberation, ISU President Martin Jischke has announced the theme for the 2000-2001 school year.
“Strengthening Families to Become the Best,” which is centered around the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will be the focus of several family-oriented activities and lecture programs, said Murray Blackwelder, vice president for External Affairs.
“The College of Family and Consumer Sciences, through its extension and outreach, touches a lot of families in all the communities in Iowa,” he said. “It’s natural for this to evolve out of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.”
The FCS college is currently planning programs for the theme year, said Carol Meeks, dean of FCS.
“[We’re involved] in a zillion ways,” she said. “This is an opportunity to showcase the college and make people aware of what exists in the college.”
The kickoff for the event will be Aug. 10, when Iowa State will sponsor the opening day of the Iowa State Fair. The university will be showcased through its spirit rally as well as by numerous displays and personalities.
The Aug. 9 State Fair Parade will feature ISU coaches Larry Eustachy, Bill Fennelly and Amy Pyle, who will serve as co-grand marshals.
“The state fair event is very much a family event and a great way to showcase ISU,” Blackwelder said. “We have a big presence there anyway.”
The dedication of the Palmer Building, a new addition to the College of FCS, will also help to strengthen the theme with its numerous family resources, such as family and marriage counseling, Meeks said.
The theme committee is still taking ideas for speakers and activities, Blackwelder said. The monthly meetings are open to the public, and people who want to become involved are recommended to attend.
The next committee meeting is Tuesday, May 9 at noon in Room 114 of Marston Hall. For more information, contact Blackwelder at 294-7730.
