ISU softball has busy week with mixed results

A late-game, five-run surge in the top of the seventh inning wasn’t enough to hold off Creighton Wednesday, as the ISU softball team fell 11-10 in Omaha.

The Cyclones were led by senior Cinnamon Gooding, who was 3-for-5 from the plate, including a two-run home run in the top of the third inning.

After giving up four runs in the first inning, Iowa State fought back to tie the game 4-4 after three innings of play.

Iowa State took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning after senior Lisa Frank scored on senior Jessica Polo’s RBI single.

The Jays responded with five runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the bottom of the sixth to give them an 11-5 lead heading into the seventh. The Cyclones’ five-run rally ended on a ground out with two runners on base.

“Our hitting was on, but we made some key errors on defense,” senior Michelle Junod said. “They ended up really hurting us when we tried to battle back.”

The game marked the fourth in five days for the Cyclones, who faced in-state rival Iowa on Tuesday.

The No.14 Hawkeyes took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and held on for the win, despite another seventh-inning rally by Iowa State.

Gooding got a double to start off the inning and was replaced by sophomore pinch runner Amy Crittendon, who advanced to third on a single from Junod.

Sophomore Lauren Cathey’s deep shot to center field looked as if it might trigger a comeback, but an outstanding catch by Iowa’s Jill Knopf kept the Hawkeyes’ lead alive.

Although Crittendon scored on the sacrifice fly, the Cyclones couldn’t get any closer, and Iowa came away with a 3-1 victory.

“It was a good, intense game, but our bats showed up too late,” Junod said. “We have to be running on all cylinders if we want to get a victory against a ranked Iowa team.”

The Cyclones spent their weekend battling Big 12 opponent Texas A&M, dropping two to the Aggies, 8-4 and 9-1.

During Saturday’s game, Iowa State lead 4-2 at the bottom of the sixth. But several errors, combined with some hot hitting from Texas A&M, gave the Aggies the win, 8-4.

Frank was 2-4, with one RBI, and Gooding was a perfect 1-1, also contributing an RBI.

In Sunday’s contest, Iowa State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but it was to be their only run of the game. Texas A&M’s scoring streak continued, including five runs in the seventh inning, to give them a 9-1 victory over the Cyclones.

Polo was 2-of-3 at the plate, including two doubles.

Junod said it has been frustrating dropping several close games, but the team’s outlook remains positive.

“We’re so close. We just need to get a win under our belt. We’re right there,” she said.

The Cyclones were unable to rebound from the Creighton loss on Thursday, falling to Western Illinois, 4-1.

Iowa State is 15-17 overall and 3-7 in the Big 12.

They take on Texas on Saturday and Sunday, both games set for 1 p.m.
