Orchesis II shows the love

Love is the theme of this year’s “Images of Dance” concert, co-produced by Iowa State’s Orchesis II and the Iowa State Dance Tour Company.

More than 75 dancers combine their talents to form a unique blend of 20 dances focusing on the many aspects of love.

“The concert encompasses all types of love,” Michael Chan, president of Orchesis II, said. “It contains various forms and shapes of love, not necessarily just romantic love.”

Some of the different aspects of love included in this performance are the love of sweets, cats, sleep, the elderly, and spiritual love, dance professor Janice Baker said.

Sara Pitt, junior in community and regional planning and choreographer for “Images of Dance,” choreographed three pieces centered around famous love stories. They are based on “Phantom of the Opera,” “Gone with the Wind” and “Romeo and Juliet.”

The Iowa State Dance Tour Company will be performing a piece using Bette Midler’s song “Hello in There.”

“It’s a simple piece about caring for and respecting the elderly, and it’s very special due to the fragile subject member,” Baker said.

Orchesis II, the dance tour company and various Iowa State dance classes will be contributing to the various dances. Ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance will all be portrayed.

“Many different abilities are represented in this performance,” Chan said. “Some of the people are very experienced dancers, while others are not.”

For some of the dancers it might be their first time performing.

“This is the perk to being in a dance class here at Iowa State. You actually have the opportunity to perform,” Chan said.

Although the theme for all of the dances is the same, the mood that each aspect of love represents is quite different.

“There’s not one specific mood because it changes from dance to dance,” Mike Van Waardhuiven, freshman in computer engineering said. “This is what will keep the audience on their toes.”

Since the moods vary from dance to dance there is something for everyone in this performance.

“If you don’t like one dance that’s OK because you’ll probably like the next,” Baker said.

Since there are dances about children as well as grandparents the audience should be diverse, Van Waardhuiven said.

Funding for Orchesis II is provided by FOCUS, an annual festival of the arts at Iowa State which funds special, creative projects.

Orchesis I will be presenting their FOCUS presentation on April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Microbiology Building.
