Tennis sweeps weekend set

The Iowa State women’s tennis team picked up a pair of victories last weekend in non-conference action at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
The Cyclones topped Gustavus Adolphus on Friday and then handed Luther College a lopsided defeat Saturday. Both wins came by an 8-1 score and raised the Cyclones’ record to 6-11 on the season.
“It was good to get two wins. Anytime you win a match it’s nice,” said Cyclone coach Michelle Conlon. “I thought our players did a good job of getting off to a good start and staying aggressive and focused.”
Gustavus Adolphus is the fifth ranked team in Division III but proved to be no match for the Cyclones who didn’t drop a set in sweeping the six singles matches.
Kendra Leese and Karin Westberg won hard-fought second sets by 6-4 scores and Kristin Gyaki won 6-4, 6-4 over Kristen Donley in the No. 5 singles match.
“Against Gustavus Adolphus, we did a good job of closing out tough sets and won all six matches in straight sets. They’re Division III but ranked fifth, and they have a good squad that fought hard,” said Conlon.
Noortje Cornelissen won 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match while Edna Vazquez cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. At No. 6 singles, freshman Tara Goedjen earned her ninth win of the season with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
“I thought Edna Vazquez played really well. She likes to play aggressive but she also played consistent,” said Conlon.
Against Luther, the Cyclones won five of six singles matches as the only loss came from Cornelissen. Cornelissen lost 6-4, 6-2 to Maria Miller.
“Luther’s No.1 player was very consistent and got almost every ball back and that can be a frustrating style to play and I think that’s what happened to Noortje,” said Conlon.
The five Cyclone wins came in easy fashion as no player lost more than three games in a set.
“Luther is similar to Gustavus. I thought that we were pretty well focused in their matches and played well,” said Conlon.
The doubles team of Vazquez and Courtney Leese won both of their contests to improve to 20-4 on the season.
The Cyclones are back in action Saturday in a Big 12 Conference match at Oklahoma.
