Spring sports in full swing
April 6, 2000
ISU spring sports teams are having mixed results as they progress with their respective seasons.
The big story has been the gymnastics team, which qualified for NCAA national competition.
The Cyclones, No. 8 ranked in the nation, went to Tuscaloosa, Ala., and placed second at the NCAA Region 4 Championship Saturday night at Coleman Coliseum.
This marked the first time in Cyclone history that the team has advanced to national competition.
The Cyclones were led once again by Betsy Hamm, who received a 9.875 to lead the team in the first event. Hamm also placed first for the team on the balance beam, tallying a 9.825.
Hamm placed second all-around with a score of 39.350. Fellow Cyclone Jessy Smith also excelled in competition, placing fifth with a score of 38.950.
The Cyclones will now travel to the NCAA Championship in Boise, Idaho. The final meet will take place April 13-15, with the team leaving for Idaho on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cyclone baseball team is certainly struggling, as it currently owns a record of just 8-22. Iowa State is coming off a 16-3 rout at the hands of Iowa.
It’s been a tough week overall for the team, as it fell to Rockhurst at home by a score of 14-11.
And after opening up last weekend with a win over Big 12 rival Missouri, the Cyclones dropped the next two games 8-7 and 5-3.
Iowa State has been led at the plate by Aaron Runk. He is batting .369 on the season with 14 RBI’s.
Ryan Wickham, Jade O’Brien and Rob Conway round out the hitters over the .300 mark for the Cyclones.
As a team, Iowa State is hitting .274.
Charly Bigwood has been solid on the mound. With a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 3.41, Bigwood is having a strong year.
Josh Twedt is also pitching well. He is 2-2 with a 3.48 ERA.
However, with a combined ERA of 6.36, the rest of the staff has really struggled.
Iowa State will try to turn their season around with a series at home this weekend against Texas Tech.
There is better news for the ISU softball team, however. The squad carries a record of 15-13 and is fresh off a 3-0 shutout of rival Drake on Tuesday.
The Cyclones are ranked eighth in the Midwest Region National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll.
Iowa State carries a 3-5 record in conference play.
Cinnamon Gooding is the leading Cyclone hitter, batting .471 in limited action.
Among the regulars, Lisa Frank paces the team with a .323 average.
Michelle Junod, meanwhile, is also over .300 at .313.
The team’s power threat is Erica Martinez, who has hit four home runs in just 61 at bats.
However, she is also hitting only .180 at the plate.
On the mound, Jen Bice has been the ace of what so far has been a very good pitching staff.
She is 8-2 with an ERA of 2.77, both figures good for tops on the team.
Martinez, a freshman, has been a solid pitcher as well. She carries a record of 2-2 with an ERA of 3.22 on the year.
The Cyclones will take on Texas A&M at home this weekend.
Meanwhile, the ISU women’s golf team has had three meets so far this spring.
It opened up by placing 13th at the Midwest Golf Classic held in Dallas.
The Cyclones were led by Noel Jacobusse, who fired a 249 to tie for 43rd place.
Heather Elenbaas posted a 251, while Cathy Ennis was a stroke behind at 252.
Iowa State then finished second at the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Tournament held in Tampa, Fla. Freshman Laura Wells was outstanding, as she finished first in the tournament, posting a 142, which included a final round tournament best 69.
Ennis was next for Iowa State with a 153, while Elenbaas shot a 156.
Most recently, the Cyclones finished in 16th place at the San Diego State Invitational.
Erin Denefe tied for 38th place with a score of 156, while Wells shot a 157 and Noel Jacobusse ended up with a 162.

The Cyclones were paced by Mark Weghorst and Josh Clay, who each shot a two-day score of 155 to tie for 27th.
Aaron Patton was two strokes behind them at 157.
The team followed that showing with a good performance at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational held in Turlock, Calif.
The team was led by newcomer Greg Stephanson, who finished in a tie for fifth place with a score of 219.
Matt Gatchel also had a good three rounds, tying for 18th with a score of 227.
