Swarming spectacle sickening

To the editor:

The spectacle of the swarm of government agents coming in the night with automatic weapons and riot gear that busted down doors and seized Elian right before Easter is sickening beyond words.

The same Justice Department that initially refused to authorize a wiretap in the Chinese nuclear espionage case now treats the law-abiding relatives of Elian and the fisherman who saved Elian’s life in the ocean like public enemy number one.

Elian’s mother died to bring him out of socialist oppression in Cuba to freedom in America.

While mentioning this may cause eyes to roll in the heads of the cultural relativists in academia and the media, that wish for her son should not be forgotten or simply dismissed.

Elian’s father did not visit Elian in Miami even though he was told he could. Instead, he went to Washington, D.C. — hundreds of miles further from his son in Miami than he was in Cuba.

When Elian was taken to a military base after the government raid, the Miami relatives went there immediately to try to be with him. Unlike Elian’s father, they didn’t need Castro’s permission to go where they wanted.

The mishandling of the Elian Gonzales situation is the last straw. Janet Reno should resign immediately from the Justice Department.

From the Waco disaster that killed about 90 people to failing to properly investigate the Clinton-Gore 1996 campaign finance violations to the facist handling of the Elian case, Janet Reno’s performance in office is inexcusable.
