Couples Movie: As Good as It Gets

Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt star in the 1997 romantic comedy-drama set in New York City. Melvin Udall (Nicholson) is a reclusive best-selling author who suffers from severe OCD. Misogynistic, homophobic and grumpy-as-could-be, Udall finds himself entangled in the life of his gay neighbor, Simon Bishop and falling in love with a waitress at his favorite restaurant. When Bishop is robbed and beaten, responsibility falls on Udall to take care of Bishop’s small dog. The dog slowly chips away at the walls Udall has built over the years, eventually creating a strong bond between the two. Although smitten by the joy of having a dog, Udall continues to be an awful person to Carol Connelly (Hunt). Overwhelmed by medical bills, Bishop must find a way to get to Baltimore to acquire money from his parents, but cannot drive himself. Udall and Connelly agree to take him to Baltimore, where along the way friendships and relationships blossom between them. Ranked number 140 on Empire’s “500 Greatest Movies of All Time” list, “As Good as It Gets” is sure to put a smile on any couples face.

Singles Movie: The End of the Tour

Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel put on career-defining performances in this 2015 film based on Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky’s memoir “Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself.” Detailing a days-long interview with critically-acclaimed writer, the late David Foster Wallace, the film hits all the sweet spots for a singles movie night. Distraught over the news of Wallace’s suicide, Lipsky returns to a vintage tape recorder used during his time with Wallace 14 years earlier. The film depicts Lipsky’s and Wallace’s interaction for a majority of the movie. Lipsky, originally sceptical of and annoyed by Wallace, soon learns the depths of Wallace’s depression and addiction to television. The two forge a unique bond between novelist and journalist, travelling through Minnesota and Illinois on Wallace’s book tour. Filled with tension, laughs and a whole lot of tears, The End of the Tour is sure to be the perfect nightcap.
