IRHA may change bylaws for elections
March 23, 2000
A bill proposing changes in the Inter-Residence Hall Association bylaws for elections will be voted at the group’s meeting tonight.
Jeff Greiner, IRHA vice president, said the bylaws currently say the only people who can run for positions in IRHA must live in the Richardson Court Association, Towers Residence Association or Union Drive Association.
“The new bill will make it more broad,” Greiner said, “so it can include Hawthorn Court, making it easier for them to join.”
When the bill was introduced at the last meeting, some members of parliament said it is unnecessary to include Hawthorn Court because of its apartment-style living, making it harder for students to come together.
“I don’t think it will be easy to create a student-government atmosphere,” Bill Wychulis, TRA president, said at the last IRHA meeting.
However, other parliament members said they thought the bylaws needed to be updated and should include Hawthorn Court.
“The bill is needed because the IRHA bylaws are outdated,” said Dustin Hughson, Oak-Elm representative. “It’ll make for a more diverse area of students in IRHA.”
Jason Hahn, Wilson representative, said he was not sure if the bill would pass because of differing opinions among parliament members.
“Right now, I don’t know [about my opinion]. I know it has a lot of opposition and a lot of support,” Hahn said. “Some students are moving out there to get away from the residence hall atmosphere and don’t want to pay dues. Some others would really like to get involved in student government.”
In other news, parliament will be introduced to a new bill proposing to give $1,000 to the Multicultural Awareness and Support System for a block party in RCA next month.
David Sims, IRHA president, said the money will go toward the payment of a DJ, bands and for the building of the stage, lighting and sound systems.
The meeting will be held in the Large Conference Room in Maple-Willow-Larch tonight at 7 p.m.
