Improv comedy hits ISU 9

Modeled after the improv show “Whose Line is it Anyway?,” ISU 9 Television has created a new show, “Chuckle McBuckle’s Dirty Laundry.”

Encouraging crowd participation and filmed before a live studio audience, the show includes a cast of four players and a host.

“The half-hour show consists of the four players participating in various games including the Question Game, the Alphabet Game, Dubbed Movie and Props,” said producer Andy Langager.

The Question Game requires the players to structure everything they say in the form of a question, while the Alphabet Game requires them to begin each sentence with the next letter of the alphabet.

Two players at a time participate in Dubbed Movie. The players are given movie lines and one player says the lines while the other one mouths the words and acts out the actions, Langager said.

“It becomes a mix of who’s in charge of who,” said Michael Dahlstrom, senior in journalism and mass communications.

Dahlstrom is one of the regular players for the new show.

“Sometimes the person who is acting will have to pretend to pull something out of his pocket in order to follow along with what the other player is saying,” Dahlstrom said.

During the game Props, the players are split into groups and given various objects to work with.

“Props is usually the funniest because the players get to really use their imaginations,” Langager said.

The show is experimental and is hoping to create a following of people who like improv.

“We’ve been talking about making an improv show like this for awhile,” Dahlstrom said. “It’s something that ISU 9 doesn’t have.”

Part of what makes the show unique to ISU 9 is its live audience.

“They give input and ideas throughout the taping,” Langager said. “The live studio audience is a vital part of our show.”

Two tapings of the show have already taken place.

The audience for the first show included almost 30 people, but there were fewer for the second taping.

“Technically the second show was better, but the players didn’t have as large of an audience to react to,” Langager said. “We’re hoping to have an even better crowd for our third taping.”

The taping for the next show is today, starting at 7:30 p.m. However, the audience should plan to be there around 7:00 p.m. The studio is located in the Communications Building near the Molecular Biology Building.

“If people are bored early on Friday night they can come and watch the taping and then go out to parties or the bar afterwards,” Dahlstrom said.

The producers are hoping to form a rotation of players.

“We’ve seen a lot of interest so far and we’d like to form a rotation so that we can give more students the opportunity to participate,” Langager said.

“It’s just for fun,” Dahlstrom added. “We’re having a good time, and hopefully we’re being funny.”
