Ziegler shocks, offends freshmen

Ben Combs

To the editor:

I am shocked at Sara Ziegler’s column about voter apathy. While this topic is worth discussing, your generalizations were uncalled for.

You act as though all freshmen are uninformed, politically apathetic losers. You based this on one article that interviewed only freshmen and a few sophomores.

Well, even if all freshmen didn’t vote we should have close to a 75 percent turnout, right? I guess some seniors and juniors might not be voting either.

You claim the freshmen interviewed are blaming others for their lack of information on the candidates. In the quotes printed they never once acted as if it were anyone’s fault but their own apathy. But then again, it might have something to do with their classload this semester.

I decided to take those five minutes and reread the Daily’s “in-depth” coverage of the candidates and their views. All I found were four short articles with some vague quotes from the candidates.

I admit I learned quite a bit. Here it is: All candidates want to improve communication. Ohh, way to take a stand on that one, guys.

I learned that using buzz words can replace actually deciding what the issues are. I learned that candidates are willing to pander to every group they can.

Their promises never show up in the fall. I feel so much better informed now that I have read these short articles filled with vague quotes that could have been cut and pasted on your computer.

So, Sara, just back off. There may be more than one reason students aren’t voting. Next time write your column on why no candidates are willing to take a stand on something.

If GSB’s most important function is giving out “obscene amounts of our money” why they aren’t talking about it?

These are the real reasons students aren’t voting. Why should we care? Will anything change? I doubt it.

I’m going to vote in this election just so they can’t say I didn’t care. Will it matter who I vote for?
