Say what you want, when you want-this is America!

To the editor:

In the article “Anti-abortion table tents cause commotion” from March 1, it was reported that the Department of Residence received numerous complaints about the approval of the anti-abortion table tents in dining service.

It is important to realize that every student organization has an equal opportunity to distribute table tents.

The Department of Residence does not have any bias against particular organizations.

I, too, was disgusted by the tacky tents that were distributed by the Young Americans for Freedom (the name must be a joke).

But I will not ask Food Service to start censuring table tents because of this incident.

It is important to uphold our First Amendment rights to free speech, that includes public dining areas.

Withholding free speech in one instance makes it more acceptable to withhold it in another, and another.

If you were disturbed by these table tents, I suggest you e-mail Ben Studenski, the president of YAF.

I also encourage you to support and participate in the American Civil Liberties Union or the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance on campus; two organizations that work for the protection of reproductive rights.

Or, you could fight free speech with free speech by putting up your own table tents or posters.
