Somehow, the ISU women’s basketball team just keeps getting better.
The Cyclones pounded Saint Francis College 92-63 Saturday night to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The game was played in front of 13,167 fans at Hilton Coliseum, which marked the largest crowd to ever witness a first or second round game in NCAA history.
“That’s the first thing we need to do, is thank our great fans for coming out and supporting us like they have been all year,” ISU coach Bill Fennelly said.
Iowa State made 15 of their 31 three-pointers, which set a midwest region record, and fell only one short of the NCAA tournament record.
“It felt more like 30 threes. I want to know who their shooting coach is,” St. Francis coach Myndi Hill said.
The Cyclones were led by Angie Welle, who scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Megan Taylor and Stacy Frese added 17 points, while Desir‚e Francis scored 16 in just 22 minutes.
Jess Zinobile, who entered the contest averaging 23.2 points and 11.9 rebounds, showed she could compete with the best in the nation when she tallied 27 points and had nine rebounds.
The game was relatively close at 30-21 with 10:53 left in the first half before the Cyclones went on a13-0 run that made the lead an insurmountable 22.
Iowa State took a 50-31 lead into the intermission and dominated the second half as Lindsey Wilson took the spotlight, scoring 13 points and handing out six assists for the game.
As good as the Cyclones were from outside, they also dominated inside the paint, outrebounding the Red Flash 50-28 inside.
“We had both the inside and outside working tonight,” Frese said. “When that happens, we’re tough to beat.”
