It seems as if the semester just started, but it is already time to start planning for Veishea.

One of the annual traditions that supports local music is the Veishea Battle of the Bands.

Applications are now being taken to compete in the event, which takes place on Thursday, April 13 from 2 p.m. until midnight. Applicants must be students or faculty members of Iowa State, according to an advertisement.

As an incentive, prizes will be awarded in several different categories.

For more information, contact Greg Schleusner, the music coordinator, at [email protected].

Registration is due by Friday, March 24.

Remember your first introduction to the parental advisory sticker? As a youngster under 18 it was challenging to get your hands on a release with the warning on it, but it was all the more sweeter when you finally did get a hold of the forbidden music.

One of the censored groups some encountered in their youth is 2 Live Crew. They took the explicit lyric warning to the extreme with their overly explicit rhapsodies in the 1980s.

To relive that prepubescent rush of listening to something that would have gotten you grounded for life if your parents ever found out about it, head to Iowa City Thursday night.

The nostalgia factor will be worth the drive.

2 Live Crew will perform with special guest Beyond at the Union Bar, 121 East College Street, in Iowa City. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

While major record labels have a grueling grip on the mass music scene, independent labels have honorably avoided the commercialization of the music industry by not selling their souls to the corporate giants in the recording booth.

Two discs filled with die hard music-making-spirits are being released later this month in celebration of the genre’s efforts.

Thirty tracks of indie rock will appear on K-Tel’s March 21 release, “Gimme Indie Rock, Volume 1,” according to All Star News.

The ultimate indie lineup includes songs from the Vaselines, Husker Du, the Minutemen, the Fall, Black Flag, the Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, the Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo, the Mekons, Galaxie 500 and the Feelies, to name a few.
