The Government of the Student Body passed a bill to help send the ISU Ski and Snowboard Club to a national snowboard competition, but a bill to fund the ISU men’s hockey team trip to the national tournament failed at the senate meeting Wednesday night.

The Ski and Snowboard team, in its first year of competition, had three members qualify for the USA Snowboard Association national competition in New Hampshire.

The senate voted 26-8 in favor of allocating $2,201.12 from the Senate Discretionary Account to the team to send six people to the competition.

The team requested the money from GSB to pay for the entry fees, half of the lift tickets, half of the lodging expenses and transportation expenses for the three qualified members, two alternate members and a coach.

Some senators took issue with the request to send three additional people to the competition. However, other senators pointed out the importance of these people to the success of the competitors.

“They are essential for the other three people who actually are going down the hill,” said Jonathon Weaver, TRA. “Let’s give them the money.”

Jeremy Peterson, business, said the alternate team members, who will primarily serve as equipment managers for the competitors, are “fundamental.”

“That coach is there for a reason,” he added.

The ISU Men’s Hockey team’s request for money did not fare as well on the senate floor. An amended copy of the bill, which would have allocated $2,742 from the Senate Discretionary Account to the team to pay for travel and lodging at the American Collegiate Hockey Associate tournament.

Although money previously was allocated from GSB for the national tournament, that money already has been spent in emergency situations, said the bill’s author, Gregory Tew, engineering.

Christian Edmiston, graduate, said the team asked the senate for additional money for the same purpose last year.

“We gave them money for the exact same thing one year ago,” he said. “That, to me, is not the way to go about things.”
