We still have a long way to go

To the editor:
Everyone is very proud of the way the Government of the Student Body elections turned out. I can’t remember how many times I heard student leaders say how wonderful it was to increase voter turn-out by two-fold.
I am also a student leader, and I’m not proud. I’m glad the turn-out was better than before, but it’s only a first step … and in my opinion, a small one at that.
We are in college; we’re supposed to be the educated/more informed segment of the population. People who are educated are supposed to care what happens to them and around them.
It only makes sense to me that the group of people that would go to college would be the same group of people that would vote more.
Our nation is ashamed at the fact that only 20 percent of our population votes.
The educated people should have a rate of voting higher than that you’d think, but we can only get about 12 percent for GSB.
I’m not pointing fingers anywhere, I’m saying that it’s great that voter turnout has increased, but don’t start thinking you’ve won the fight for good voter turnout.
We’re still a long ways away from where we should be. There are still more elections coming up in student government this year and in our national government.
It’s my hope that people will get out there and make themselves heard.
