Three Cyclones end seasons in Minnesota
March 29, 2000
Three ISU Cyclones ended their season with some of the nation’s elite swimmers at the NCAA Championship meet in Minneapolis.
The meet marked the end of a career at Iowa State for seniors Brian Rogers and Mitch McGinty. The two seniors placed in the top 25 spots in the nation in at least one event.
Rogers had the highest finish for the Cyclones. He took 14th place in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 53.91 seconds and because he finished in the top 16 spots he earned All-American status.
Rogers also earned All-American honors in 1998. He finished 27th in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:01.45.
Rogers ended his ISU career with school records in the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard backstroke, and he took part in the 200-yard medley relay record.
“Brian Rogers probably had the best meet of the three swimmers,” said head coach Trip Hedrick.
McGinty placed 25th in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 54.12 seconds. He also finished 34th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:01.89.
McGinty finished up at Iowa State as the school record holder in the 100-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Dylan de Bruin also participated at the meet for the Cyclones.
He placed 34th in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.79 seconds.
De Bruin took 38th place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.63 seconds.
The Cyclones, as a team, tied for 35th place. The University of Texas Longhorns, champions of the Big XII Conference, won the national championship.
Iowa State finished up the year with a 7-2 regular season mark and placed third at the Big XII meet.
Hedrick said the team met its goal.
“The goal of this team was to move into the upper tier of the conference and we accomplished that,” Hedrick said.
The season contained many good memories in Iowa State swimming.
Hedrick cited the return of Mitch McGinty from surgery, the home win over Iowa, the outstanding performance at the conference meet and the high number of academic honors bestowed on the team as being highlights of the season.
Hedrick believes the team improved all season.
“We had tremendous improvement across the board,” Hedrick said.
He also mentioned the effort put forth by the Cyclones this season.
“It was a total team effort and commitment to hard work and intensity and also doing the little things to get better,” Hedrick said. “We’re pleased with the season.”
