Happy V-Day, Iowa State
February 14, 2000
Valentine’s Day is here and we at the Daily want to encourage all of you to show that special someone how you feel.
Let the love flow already.
If you are alone on Valentine’s Day, it can be hard to get into this holiday.
It’s easy to become embittered and focus only upon the negative as many of our lonelier columnists have proven.
You should know there are plenty of places to put that love if someone hasn’t stepped up to claim it by now.
Send a card to a friend. Remember the joy of Valentine’s Day when you were in grade school.
Giving those cheap, little pink cards to all the kids in your class made everyone feel good. They certainly are cheap enough.
Buy a huge box and have enough for next year.
Address them to everyone on your dorm floor and slip them quietly under doors and wait for the squeals of delight.
Put one in your professor’s mailbox. It couldn’t hurt your grade any.
Stop by President Jischke’s office and ask his secretary to pass one along to him. Everybody needs to be loved and Dr. J is no different.
But why stop there when there are so many administrators and public officials who get the business year round?
Residence front man Randy Alexander, Head of DPS, Loras Jaeger, and Stu Burger and the rest of your friendly Food Service staff might like to know how much you care at this time of the year, too.
Still stuck for ideas on how you can take part in the fun? No problem.
GSB could use a hug.
Or introduce an international student to a custom they don’t have in their own country.
Could anything be sweeter than to go to school in a strange land like Iowa only to find yourself presented with a card with a big red heart on it and the words “Be Mine.”
Probably not.
Later in the day you can have a good laugh trying to explain the custom, which might appear at first glance to be more than a little on the macabre side. It’s all in good fun.
Buy a bag of candy hearts and hand them out liberally in all of your classes and say “Happy Valentine’s Day” to everyone in earshot. You’ve got the love to give and it doesn’t cost much.
There is no excuse good enough to not make someone else’s day that much better.
So Happy Valentine’s Day Iowa State. We at the Daily just wanted to let you know that, even though we don’t say it as often as we should, we love you. Be our valentines.
