Cyclone fans catch spirit fever, transmit to others

To the editor:

I am writing this in hopes of educating all of the other people out there claiming to be “one of Iowa State’s biggest fans,” such as Mark Wibholm in Monday’s Daily.

Mr. Wibholm, I’m truly glad that you can remember when Barry Stevens, Jeff Grayer and Jeff Hornacek starred here, but I need to correct your “amazing” memory by informing you that Lafester Rhodes scored 54 points (not the 59 that you claimed) in the 102-100 overtime victory over Iowa on December 19, 1987.

For the record, Rhodes’ single game total is still a Hilton Coliseum record for points scored for both Iowa State and their opponents.

I don’t claim to be the world’s biggest Cyclone fan, but the least I can do is offer the true statistics to the legions and legions of the Cyclone faithful.

And for the record, before you try to recount other amazing memories of Cyclone athletics, last year’s team didn’t go to a bowl game, and no, Iowa State still hasn’t been to a bowl game since 1978.

I just thought I’d clarify that, too.
