Cael Sanderson continued his mastery over Minnesota’s Brandon Eggum at the NWCA All-Star Classic at the Jenison Wrestling Arena Monday night.

Sanderson, top-ranked at 184, posted a 6-1 victory over the third-ranked Eggum to raise his season record to 29-0 and his career mark to 68-0.

“I was happy with how I wrestled but I know I can improve. I felt in control of the match the entire time. It was a fight but I never felt in danger of him scoring on me,” Sanderson said.

Sanderson has now defeated Eggum three times this season and beat him in the finals on the NCAA tournament last season by the same 6-1 score.

“I think Eggum has trouble with my style. I’m a little quicker than he is, and I think he has problems with that, but every point is getting harder to score on him,” Sanderson said.

This season Sanderson defeated Eggum 7-4 at the Cyclone Open and cruised to a 8-0 decision at National Duals.

Cody Sanderson also participated in the meet but found a different result as he dropped a 3-2 decision to Michigan State’s Pat McNamara at 133 pounds.

Sanderson scored a takedown in the first period but didn’t score in the second and took a 2-0 lead into the final period.

McNamara opened the final period by scoring an escape to cut the lead to 2-1. McNamara then scored the go-ahead takedown and rode Sanderson out for the win.

Despite the defeat, Cael Sanderson felt the match will be a valuable experience for his brother, who might face McNamara again at the NCAA tournament.

“Cody is sore about the loss, but this is a match that he needed to have. He’ll most likely wrestle McNamara in the semifinals at nationals so now he knows his style and that he’s tough on top,” Sanderson said.

The Sanderson brothers were the only Cyclone participants in the All-Star meet, and Cael noticed the difference of not having the rest of the team around.

“Yeah, it’s a little different. Well, it’s a lot different. It’s something you got to use to make yourself stronger mentally, to be able to wrestle in different situations like that,” Cael Sanderson said.

The Cyclones are back in action Friday night, hosting Missouri at 7 p.m.
