Wrestlers dominate Nebraska, UNI

The ISU wrestling team capped off the regular season in impressive fashion by taking two easy victories over top-10 ranked opponents over the weekend.

The Cyclones, ranked second, took a 26-12 victory over No. 8 Nebraska Friday in their final home meet of the season and then whipped No. 10 Northern Iowa 33-8 Sunday in Cedar Falls.

The final dual record for the Cyclones ends up at 20-2 which is the best mark since the 1985-86 team went 19-1.

The Cyclones are now off for two weeks before heading to Lincoln, Neb. for the Big-12 Championships on March 5 where NCAA tournament berths will be up for grabs.

“We are rounding into shape. A new season starts for us now,” Cyclone coach Bobby Douglas said.

For Trent Hynek and Cody Sanderson, Friday night was the last time in front of home fans and both went out winners.

Hynek, ranked second, flattened Matt Zutavern for the pin in 1: 38 while Sanderson, ranked third, picked up a hard-fought 6-4 win over No. 9 Todd Beckerman.

Douglas realizes his time with the two seniors is running out, and he is going to be sad to see them go.

“It is hard for me to talk about Cody and Trent without getting emotional, they mean so much to this program,” Douglas said. “Cody had a ranked opponent tonight and it was a tough match just like it will be at the Big 12 meet.”

The Cyclone pair of No. 1 ranked wrestlers also won big. Cael Sanderson rolled to a 22-6 technical fall win at 184 while Joe Heskett built a 16-2 lead before pinning Tony Deneke in the third period at 165.

Sonny Marchette and Billy Maldonado added decision wins at 141 and 149 respectively.

Hynek was the center of attention Sunday as he took on his younger brother Paul, who’s a redshirt freshman for the Panthers.

The match was the first time a Cyclone has wrestled his brother since Mike Kelly beat Iowa’s Paul Kelly in 1990.

Hynek didn’t go easy on his brother as he cruised to a 10-3 win to raise his season record to 19-0.

The Panthers spent a lot of time on their backs as the Cyclones recorded three falls in the victory.

Cody Sanderson pinned Chad Boudreaux with five seconds left in the 133-pound match while Heskett stuck Nate Lawrenz with a cradle at 2:34 to record his 24th career pin and sports a season record of 25-1.

At 184, Cael Sanderson didn’t waste any time as he put Kyle Hansen on his back in the first period for a fall in 2:57.

Sanderson is now 33-0 on the season which includes 22 wins by fall or technical fall.

Matt Azevedo claimed an 8-3 decision win over Eric Dunmire at 125 and Cole Sanderson held off Bob Koenig for a 7-5 victory at 157.

Rounding out the Cyclone winners was Sonny Marchette at 141. Marchette gave up a four-point throw to Nick Flach in the second period but regrouped to pull out a 6-4 overtime victory.

“Northern Iowa is a top ten team so to beat them like this in their building is quite an accomplishment,” Douglas said.
