A festival of outdoor films, sponsored by the Kavu outdoor wear company, will be shown in the Sun Room of Memorial Union tonight at 7. The festival will feature 10 to 30 minute films of kayaking, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding.

Kavu and Ames Outdoor Gear, 4723 W Lincoln Way, are sponsoring the festival. Student Union Board Films, the ISU Ski and Snowboard Club, Mountaineering Club, Canoe and Kayak Club and Cycling Club are co-sponsoring the event.

Aaron Filipi, Department Manager of Ames Outdoor Gear, hopes that this opportunity to experience extreme outdoor sports will introduce and attract more people to local clubs and organizations that support the outdoor lifestyle.

“Our goal in hosting this is to bring people together who have outdoor interests and keep the festival going in coming years,” Filipi said.

The first film, “Twitch,” is a kayaking adventure. The film is by Eric Link and features Tao Berman, Marco Collela, Gavin Merdoch and Ben Selznick.

Filipi said “Twitch” involves kayak experts negotiating insane rapids.

The second film, “The Realm,” by Teton Gravity Search, takes the audience on a quick ski trip with big mountain experts such as Jeremy Nobis.

“Shift,” a mountain-biking film, takes a glimpse at biking in North Shore Vancouver, British Columbia. The show features mountain biking over bridges and some amazing street stunts.

The final film by Rob DesLauriers takes a look into backcountry ski and snowboard mountaineering in the Altai Mountains of Russia, Alaska and British Columbia.

Alex Lowe, recently killed in a avalanche, along with others appears in this film. Lowe has also appeared on the cover of Outside Magazine.

Filipi said the film provides an opportunity to see Lowe, one of the world’s best climbers, in action.

Erin Orr, social chair of the Ski and Snowboard Club, said in addition to the films, all of the clubs sponsoring the event will have booths set up providing information about the club.

The doors open at 6 p.m.with the show starting at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public and students.

No admission will be charged. Orr said to remember to stick around after the show for free gifts given away by Ames Outdoor Gear and the sponsoring clubs.
