Swimmers fall at Nebraska

The 25th ranked ISU men’s swimming and diving team was defeated Saturday by 17th ranked Nebraska, 168-129, in Lincoln.
The loss snaps Iowa State’s four meet winning streak.
The Cyclones are now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference.
“We were defeated by a very talented team,” Cyclone head coach Trip Hedrick said. “I’m proud with the way the team handled the challenge.”
Iowa State placed in at least two of the top three places in eight of the 16 events.
In addition, the Cyclones took the top two spots in two of those eight events.
The Cyclones also had five first place finishes.
Brian Rogers turned in one of those first place finishes in the 100-meter backstroke.
His time in the event was 55.47 seconds. Sophomore transfer Liam Short placed second in the event.
Dylan de Bruin captured first place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.04 seconds. Jeff Gahan tallied a third place finish.
In the 100-meter freestyle it was de Bruin taking first place honors again with a time of 50.63 seconds.
A victory in the 200-meter backstroke was the first at Iowa State for Short. He raced to a time of 2:04.22.
Placing a close second was Rogers.
The Cyclones took the top two places in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
The ISU relay team of Mike Christianson, Mitch McGinty, Mike Jimenez and Rogers placed first with a time of 1:32.70.
The relay team of Ansel Lindner, Rob Breshears, Jeremy Wilson and Lovrenco Franicevic took second place.
Other top finishes for Iowa State included second and third places in the 200-meter medley relay.
The second place relay team was comprised of Henrik Ingesson, Rogers, Christianson and de Bruin.
Brett Lohmeier, Short, Wilson and Gahan made up the third place relay team.
In the 800-meter freestyle Evan deSzoeke finished second. Josh Nogar came in third.
Peder Skoog turned in a third place swim in the 200-meter freestyle.
Iowa State again got second and third places in the 200-meter butterfly.
Franicevic tallied second and Wilson finished third.Danny Binkowski placed third in the 200-meter breaststroke.
The Cyclones captured second and third places in the 400-meter freestyle.
In second place was deSzoeke, and taking third place was Franicevic.
McGinty finished in third place in the 100-meter butterfly. Short placed a close second in the 200-meter individual medley.
In diving Jim Zagaria finished in third place in the three-meter competition.
Hedrick said de Bruin, Rogers, Short, and deSzoeke had some of the better swims in the meet.
He also said that divers Steve Mohabir and Jim Zagaria qualified for the NCAA Zone Championship, which is a qualifying event for nationals.
“This meet gave us a chance to swim against some very talented individuals,” said Hedrick. “That’s a preview of what’s to come at the NCAAs.”
Next Iowa State faces the University of North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux come to Ames ranked 17th in Division-II swimming. The meet is at 7 p.m. Friday and 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Beyer Hall Pool.
