Summertime blues

Anne Bunner

To the editor:

It is important to look at the proposed lengthening of winter break and the consequent shortening of summer break from an economic perspective. Many students rely on summer earnings to pay for living expenses, books and sometimes tuition.

It is more difficult to find work for three weeks in winter than over summer break. The loss of one week of summer break would constitute the loss of a few hundred dollars in earnings for many students. This would put those students already struggling financially to pay for the enormous expense of a college education at an even further disadvantage.

I ask that we please remember, in making the decision whether to lengthen winter break, that shortening summer break will cause some students significant financial stress.
