IRHA to vote on bill contesting state-proposed ban on alcohol in dorms

The Inter-Residence Hall Association will vote on a bill that would counter the Iowa Legislature’s proposed ban on alcohol in dorms at all public and private universities at tonight’s meeting.

During last week’s meeting, IRHA President David Sims said IRHA was “the voice for the undergraduate and graduate halls” and would try to make sure that the ban would not happen on the ISU campus.

Chris Benson, Birch-Welch-Roberts representative, co-wrote the bill with Madeline Moore, Richardson Court Association treasurer, and said the Statehouse bill targets the wrong people.

“It’s not right to make drinking in your own home a criminal offense,” Benson said. “An important thing about college is to make the right choices responsibly on your own.”

Moore said the IRHA bill is a mature way of expressing why residents wouldn’t like the ban.

“I believe that it will pass,” Moore said. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t.”

If the bill passes, IRHA will send a copy to the supporters of the Legislature’s bill and ISU officials.

Also, a bill concerning ethernet connections in the dorms will be voted on tonight. The bill proposes that every student pay a flat fee for ethernet service that would be no more than $60. Every room would be hooked up to an ethernet connection, instead of having residents pay an installment fee.

Benson said the use of ethernet among students is growing, but he wasn’t sure if the bill will make it through IRHA parliament.

“I think it will benefit the students, but I’m not convinced that now is the time,” Benson said.

Two new bills will be introduced. One will seat the new vice president, Jeff Greiner, and the other bill proposes to let all residence hall students ride CyRide at a discounted price.

The meeting will be held at 7 tonight in Chessman Lounge of Helser Hall.
