Senior Sanderson reaches 100-victory milestone
January 19, 2000
Iowa State picked up its fifth straight dual win of the season with a 37-3 victory over an over-matched Hofstra squad Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.
The highlight of the day for the Cyclones came at 133 pounds where Cody Sanderson became the 24th Cyclone wrestler to record 100 career wins.
Sanderson, ranked second, defeated sixth-ranked Roman Fieszar 6-1 to reach the century mark.
“It’s exciting to reach 100 wins. It’s been kind of a mini-goal for the season,” Sanderson said. “We’ve had so many great wrestlers that have come here before me so it’s kind of nice to have my name in the record book beside some of them. It’s an honor.”
Getting his 100th victory wasn’t easy as Sanderson only led 3-1 late in the final period.
Sanderson secured the match with a takedown with 34 seconds left to move his career record to 100-31 including an 17-1 mark this season.
“I wrestled that guy in the third round at nationals last year and it was about the same match,” said Sanderson. “I took quite a bit of time off getting my knee back to full strength so I know I still need some work to do. I feel I’m just a half step behind where I want to be.”
Cyclone coach Bobby Douglas was happy with the performance and the Cyclones point total.
“This is a good win for us. We needed some points and we got them. I’d like to see more points but 37-3 means we had a good night and the guys wrestled well,” said Douglas.
The Cyclones were again without all-American heavyweight Trent Hynek due to injury but Mark Knauer continued to perform in his place.
Knauer cruised to a 14-3 major decision over Mike Eberle to raise his season record to 8-3.
“Knauer has been doing this ever since he’s been here. He’s been stepping in and doing an excellent job,” said Douglas.
Matt Azevedo and Sonny Marchette were each winners in exciting fashion. Azevedo scored a takedown with 25 seconds left, to win 3-1 at 125 and Marchette escaped one second into double overtime for a 2-1 victory at 141.
At 165, Joe Heskett handed Noel Thompson a 11-6 defeat. Heskett moved up to the top spot in the rankings at 165 pounds last week.
The Flying Dutchmen didn’t help their cause by giving the Cyclones three forfeits. Winning by forfeit were Cole Sanderson at 157, Perry Parks at 174 and Cael Sanderson at 184.
The lone Flying Dutchmen victory came at 149 where seventh-rated Eric Schmiesing won 7-4 over Billy Maldonado.
The Cyclones are now 11-1 on the season and are back in action at the National Duals this weekend in State College, Pa.
