Two ISU students died during winter break, one a victim of a suicide and the other of natural causes.

Another man also died when he was struck by a train.

Jeremy Harden, 22, senior in aerospace engineering from West Des Moines, was found dead in his apartment at 3203 West St. by Ames Police officers during the early-morning hours of Dec. 27, according to a prepared statement from Randy Kessel, Ames Police public information officer.

Harden, who was a member of the ISU Marching Band and the ISU Drumline, was a victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Another ISU student, Kevin Struecker, 21, senior in finance from Fenton, also died during the break, said Department of Public Safety Associate Director Jerry Stewart.

Stewart said officers were dispatched to Struecker’s apartment at room 149G University Village on Dec. 12 at 9:43 a.m., where they discovered Struecker’s body.

Stewart said based on interviews, no foul play was expected in the case, and a medical examination revealed that Struecker died of natural causes.

The third individual, Montana native James Joseph Lawson, 54, was killed on Dec. 19 at about 3 p.m. when an eastbound Union Pacific struck him at the Duff Avenue railroad crossing, Ames Police said.

Lawson was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.

According to the Ames Tribune, a medical examination of the body by Story County Coroner Jon Fagre showed Lawson had a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit of .10 at the time of his death.

An investigation is still continuing by the Ames Police Department.
