Top-ranked wrestlers do battle at Hilton tonight
December 10, 1999
The top-ranked Iowa State wrestling team will be out to make a statement tonight when it hosts No. 2 Iowa at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones have a chance to end 13 years of domination of the intrastate rivalry by the Hawkeyes and in the process show that they are the best team in the nation.
The Hawkeyes enter the meet with 24 consecutive victories in the series.
The last time the Cyclones defeated the Hawks was a 23-12 victory in 1987. Last season the Hawkeyes were victorious by scores of 32-7 and 30-14.
One factor working to the Cyclones advantage is the recent slide by the Hawkeyes as a dual team.
The Hawks have won five straight national titles but have also lost seven duals in the last two seasons after dropping only seven in the previous eight.
The Cyclones enter the showdown with a 6-0 dual record and have four undefeated wrestlers and five more with just one defeat.
Returning 184-pound national champion Cael Sanderson and national runnerup Cody Sanderson are both ranked No. 1 at their weight class and boast 11-0 and 13-0 records respectively.
Also unbeaten for Cyclones are Zach Thompson, 13-0 at 197, and heavyweight Trent Hynek who sports a 11-0 record. Both are ranked second.
The Hawkeyes are 3-0 in dual meets after victories over Northern Iowa, South Dakota State and Iowa Central Community College.
The Hawkeyes have a pair of national champions in Doug Schwab and T.J. Williams.
Schwab won the 141-pound title last season and is 8-0 at the same weight this year while Williams is 3-0 at 157 after winning the title with an unbeaten mark last year.
One key match in the meet will be at 133 pounds where top-ranked Cody Sanderson faces No. 2 Eric Juergens.
Juergens, a two-time all-American, holds a 3-1 career advantage over Sanderson including two wins last year.
