The Iowa State women’s swimming team picked up a pair of dual meet victories over the weekend.

The Cyclones rolled past intra-state rival Northern Iowa by a 149-86 score Friday night in Cedar Falls. Saturday the Cyclones traveled to Northfield, Minn. to hand St. Olaf a 147-87 defeat.

The two wins improve the Cyclones record to 3-2.

“We are very happy with the results,” said Cyclone coach Duane Sorenson. “Northern Iowa has a new coach and is rebuilding so they’re kind of down this year. St. Olaf is a good Division III school and that meet gives us a chance to swim our girls in other events.”

In the victory over Northern Iowa, the Cyclones won eight of the 13 events and were led by sophomore Becca Meyer. Meyer finished second in both the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:15.99 and the 500 freestyle in 5:20.27.

Diver Thea Hoag also turned in a fine performance by winning the 3-meter springboard with 225.45 points and finishing second in the 1-meter with 224.20 points.

Sophomore Alison Kimble powered the Cyclone effort on Saturday with a win in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:18.77 and a runnerup finish in the 200 freestyle.

Marie-Eve Tremblay added a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle and Kelly Yates swam to victory in the 1,000 freestyle. Tremblay’s winning time was 25.96, and Yates won with a time of 10:41.25.

“We had some girls swim new events and they did pretty good,” said Sorenson. “Amber McDowell swam to lifetime best in the 1,000 free against Northern Iowa and Laura Hernadez turned in her best time in the 1,000 free since she’s been here against St. Olaf.”.

The Cyclones are back in action in a men-women doubleheader against intra-state rival Iowa Friday at Beyer Hall. The Cyclone women start competition at 3 p.m. while the men follow at 7 p.m.
