INDIANOLA — The No. 1 ranked Iowa State wrestling team warmed up for Friday’s showdown with No. 2 Iowa by dominating the field at the Simpson Duals Saturday.

The Cyclones started the day by posting a 44-6 victory over Augustana (Ill.) College and then proceeded to defeat Cornell College 46-6, Simpson 42-6 and Minnesota State 40-6. The Cyclones improved to 5-0 on the season with the perfect showing.

The Cyclones turned in a perfect day on the mat as the only matches lost in each dual was a forfeit at 174 pounds. Chad Ziesman, who regularly wrestles at 174 pounds, was withheld from action due to injury.

Once again sophomore Cael Sanderson was unstoppable as he went 4-0 on the day at 184 pounds and earned the tournament’s “most outstanding wrestler” award. Sanderson, ranked No. 1, raised his record to 11-0 on the season and 49-0 in his Cyclone career.

Sanderson won two matches by fall and added a pair of technical fall wins by scores of 22-6 and 17-2.

Other Cyclones who stayed unbeaten with 4-0 marks were Cody Sanderson at 133, Zach Thompson at 197 and heavyweight Trent Hynek. Sanderson and Thompson are now 13-0 while Hynek is 11-0.

At 157 pounds, Cole Sanderson made his season debut and looked impressive winning three matches by major decision and a 17-1 technical fall.

Last Sunday in the Cyclones victory over Wisconsin, Joe Heskett suffered his first season defeat, but he rebounded with a strong performance Saturday.

Heskett pinned two opponents, won by technical fall and picked up a forfeit against Augustana.

The defeat over Minnesota State was the Cyclones second victory over the Mavericks this season. The Cyclones whipped the Mavericks, the 7th-rated team in Division II, 32-6 in their season opener back on Nov. 12.

The Cyclones are off until Friday when they host the two-time defending NCAA champion Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
