Immoral decisions

In response to Peris Chamberlain’s letter on Nov. 3, I have to applaud his concern. However, there are some things about Veishea that need to be cleared up.

You stated that the student body is unable to make the right decision regarding morality. We are adults, and if we are incapable of deciding our own moral guidelines, then we are in much more trouble than can be expressed. I am not ignoring the fact that immoral decisions seem to be made constantly, but this has to be put into perspective. Wherever you go, there will be immoral decisions made, people will be hurt, and people will be killed. Alcohol does play a part in some of these tragedies.

However, Iowa State does not have the handle on immoral acts, and Veishea is not the only time students drink to excess.

Rebelling against the dry Veishea ultimatum is not “simply a justification of those who want to drink.” I choose not to drink, and I have enjoyed two dry Veisheas. The thing that enrages many is that people who are legally of age to drink — who happen to live in the dorms — are deprived of this right simply because the weekend is called Veishea.

You also commended President Jischke for his concern for our welfare. Something that has to be pointed out here is that student security has been reduced, funds have been cut, reported sexual and physical assault is up, and it’s not even April yet.

So perhaps, President Jischke and others are overly concerned about Veishea, when immoral decisions are being made daily on this campus. If we are to crack down on that, we need to focus on the problem at hand instead of taking away rights simply because of a date on the calendar.
