No one is pro-abortion
November 5, 1999
I want to clarify a common misconception that pro-lifers seem to have. In his letter about the year 2000 elections, Conor Duga used the term “pro-abortion” when he should have said “pro-choice.” For example, Mr. Duga carelessly used the phrases “pro-abortion Democrat” and “vehemently pro-abortion Bill Bradley.”
When you say “pro-abortion,” you imply that the person wants people to have abortions. No one likes the idea of getting an abortion. What we do want, however, is the choice of whether to have an abortion.
Furthermore, just because someone is pro-choice, does not even necessarily mean that they, themselves, would have an abortion.
Another careless comment that Mr. Duga made was when he said “At least some or even most of a Republican president’s appointments would read the Constitution and be able to find no right to abortion within it text.”
Well, Mr. Duga, I don’t think they would be able to find the right to smoke cigarettes, drive a car or operate a business over the Internet in the Constitution either. You’re forgetting about one of the most important parts of our Constitution, the part that has kept the document alive for so many years: The Elastic Clause.
