Ziegler is usually wrong, but this time, she’s right
November 30, 1999
Bravo to Sara Ziegler and her article “The new millennium: A world gone mad” in Monday’s paper.
Usually, I don’t agree with anything she says.
In this case, however, it’s grown to be more of a pet peeve than I would have admitted six months ago.
What’s so funny is that the major media and news organizations want to perpetuate this myth.
Think about all the corporations that have sunk millions of dollars into ads touting them as the “official” this or that of the “new millennium.”
The people who came up with the idea will be considered either really dumb or really smart. You can guess which one I’d choose.
I found this on a Web board that I frequent. I think it sums up the general mentality of some: Who cares anyway?
Everyone is treating this upcoming Jan. 1, 2000 as the new millennium.
The ONLY people who throw their parties next year at the 2000/2001 change are going to be nerds, dorks and geeks (all the ones who watch “Star Trek”).
Of course, everyone SHOULD know when the millennium is, we (at least, I) learned about it in grade school.
But as the above statement says: Who cares anyway?
