Women’s team splits dual meets

The Iowa State women’s swimming team split a pair of dual meets over the weekend at Beyer pool.
The Cyclones opened the weekend by dropping a 152-86 decision to Missouri on Friday.
They rebounded, however, two days later to post a convincing 175-125 victory over Illinois State University.
In Sunday’s victory the Cyclones won nine events, making the win especially satisfying for coach Duane Sorenson.
“This is the first time as the head coach that I’ve beaten Illinois State,” Sorenson said. “The last two years it’s been a very close meet and they edged us out both times. It’s very nice to get a win over them.”
Sorenson felt the difference in the meet came from the intensity shown from his swimmers.
“Last year I thought on paper that we had the better team, but we were very lackadaisical going into it. Today the girls were much more intense and fired up and just wanted it more,” Sorenson said.
The Cyclones were led by a pair of double-winners.
Marie Tremblay swam to victory in the 100 and 200 breaststroke races while Rena Kelinson finished first in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.
A-Lia Miles also turned in a solid performance with a win in the 200 individual medley and second place finishes in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle.
“I’m really pleased with my swimming today. I got a couple of season bests and one of those was a lifetime best, so I’m really happy,” Miles said. “I felt really confident going into the 200 IM because we were pretty far ahead as a team and I just went for the win.”
Other Cyclone victories came from Becca Meyer in the 100 butterfly and Amber McDowell in the 200 butterfly and the 200 medley relay.
Kelly Yates turned in a personal best time of 10:41.90 to win the 1000 freestyle.
“This was a great team performance today. In the past we’ve done better towards the end of the season so to turn in these kind of times this early is really great to see,” Sorenson said.
The Cyclones picked up a pair of event victories in the loss to the Tigers.
Jennifer Maupin took first place in the 1-meter diving competition and Amber McDowell won the 200 butterfly race.
“We swam much aggressive than we did at the conference meet. We overcame the jitters and did a much better job racing,” Sorenson said.
“Amber McDowell had a great swim in the 200 butterfly. Her time was a season best and she’s one second ahead of her time from last year,” he said.
Despite only winning two events, Sorenson saw several good efforts from his squad.
“We got a couple of lifetime best times today, so I’m happy with that. Marie Tremblay showed flashes of brilliance in her 200 breaststroke and now we just have to keep her going,” Sorenson said.
Next action for the Cyclones is Nov. 12 at Minnesota.
