ISU soccer moves to 9-2
October 4, 1999
The Iowa State women’s soccer team went 1-1 in a weekend of conference play.
ISU was able to pick up a 3-0 victory over the Texas Longhorns but suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 7 Texas A&M.
Friday night’s victory over Texas marked the first ever victory against the Longhorns in Cyclone history.
“We’ve taken a lot of lumps from that program,” Coach Klein said of the victory. “It felt good, and I especially wanted our seniors to enjoy the moment.”
The Cyclones struck quickly when Krista Odenwald capitalized on an Ali Sullivan assist to score her second goal of the year in the seventh minute of the game.
ISU didn’t get on the board again until the 83rd minute when Sullivan put a shot in the bottom right hand corner from the top of the box.
Sophomore Erica Florez dished out the assist, as she did for the next goal.
Florez crossed the ball to forward Janelle Beil for a goal in the 84th minute to wrap up the scoring.
This proved to be enough for the Cyclones, as they picked up the conference win, 3-0.
Goalkeeper Lynley Hilligoss made four saves to pick up her sixth shutout of the year, and the Cyclones outshot Texas, 20-10.
The win moved the Cyclones to 2-1 in conference play and 9-2 overall.
Sunday proved to be a different story for ISU as they faced No. 7 Texas A&M.
ISU came out gunning early, as Florez put in a shot from the left side of the arc.
Odenwald picked up the assist on the goal.
Just four minutes later, Texas A&M’s Heather Wiebe tied the game by scoring on a penalty kick.
The rest of the game would be dominated by the Aggies.
Near the end of the first half, Texas A&M started to drive the nail in the coffin by adding two goals in the 37th minute of the game.
Cameron Chorn and Heather Ragsdale scored 43 seconds apart to give the Aggies a 3-1 lead heading into the half.
The second half didn’t get much better for ISU, as Texas A&M tacked on another goal in the 54th minute when Nicky Thrasher scored off of a Michelle Remington assist. That would be the last score of the game, as the Aggies went on to beat the Cyclones, 4-1.
“They were a very dangerous team — a very good defending team,” Klein said. “They were everything our scouting report said they would be. The problem was that we were not everything we needed to be on that day.”
Klein did praise sophomore Erica Florez, who scored the team’s lone goal of the game early in the first half.
“I felt like she was dangerous against A&M. I felt like she did her job, but she needs some help in critical times,” Klein said.
“There are alot of things we need to work on as a team as far as communication and passing and working the ball around. Other than that, we just need to come out and win the next five games,” Florez said.
The Cyclones faced a barrage of shots from the Aggies, being outshot 35-6 on the day.
ISU keeper Lynley Hilligoss played 79 minutes, making four saves.
The loss dropped ISU to 2-2 in the conference and 9-3 overall.
ISU returns to Big 12 action this Friday when they travel to Colorado for a 4 p.m. match. The Cyclones return home for games on Oct. 22 against Oklahoma State and Oct. 24 against Oklahoma.
