Asian boy band breaks stereotypes

Just when you think you can’t get enough boy bands in your life, one more pops up out of nowhere.

But Kai isn’t your typical boy band.

California-based Asian R&B quintet Kai will come to Ames this weekend for a concert sponsored by the Asian Pacific American Awareness Club and the International Student Council.

The show is being held in support of this year’s APAAC theme, “Breaking Down Stereotypes.”

Kai formed in 1992 when A.C. Lorenzo recruited Andrew Gapuz and Leo Chan to perform a benefit concert in San Francisco.

They were very pleased with the success from the event and added Drey Silva and Errol Viray in 1995.

Reacting to the success of its first radio single, “Say You’ll Stay,” Kai left its local label in 1997 and signed with Geffen Records.

In 1998, the group released its self-titled debut, which included two versions of its continuing hit.

Kai is now touring the country in support of the record.

Saturday’s “opening act” will be an event called the “Mr. Hottie” contest, which will feature Iowa State men from organizations such as the Black Student Alliance and APAAC, among others.
