GSB to tackle fall special allocations
October 19, 1999
The Government of the Student Body finance committee has concluded its review of requests for fall special allocations and has submitted recommendations to the senate.
Fall specials, which offer a second opportunity for student groups to request money from GSB, provide money to organizations to use during the spring semester, said Jeremy Williams, GSB finance director.
Each group submits a budget, which undergoes review by the finance committee, Williams said. The committee takes into account the size of the request and the amount of money available to recommend how much money each organization should receive.
Williams described this fall’s procedures as “pretty average.” Thirteen organizations collectively requested more than $22,000, an amount that exceeded the $13,000 reserved for fall specials, according to the resolution that will be presented to the GSB senate at its meeting tonight.
The finance committee recommended almost $11,000 be distributed among the organizations, $2,000 less than available in the account.
If the senate does not agree with any appropriations made by the committee, the senate can send it back to the committee with one of three recommendations: increase money to the organization, decrease money or zero fund the organization.
The finance committee then will review GSB’s recommendations and decide whether to alter the amounts.
The senate will be presented with the committee’s decisions at the GSB meeting Oct. 27, when senators can either accept the reviewed amount or vote for zero funding, Williams said.
Any leftover funds traditionally are transferred from the fall specials account to the special projects account. However, because the special projects account is substantial at this point, Williams said several other options are being considered.
“It might be better to use the money elsewhere,” he said.
GSB will meet tonight at 7 in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union to discuss the following:
