Finals week evacuation policy up for debate at IRHA meeting

Members of the Inter-Residence Hall Association will sound off at their Thursday meeting about a new Department of Residence policy that requires residents to leave within 24 hours of their last spring final.

The residence hall policy was added to the 1999-2000 Room and Board Contract.

IRHA will debate a resolution concerning the policy.

Chris Benson, IRHA Birch-Welch-Roberts hall representative, wrote the resolution because he opposes the policy.

“The policy doesn’t have an overall benefit for the students,” Benson said. “It was written to aid the students, but a lot of people will have conflicts with moving out.”

IRHA parliament had a week to review the residence hall contract last spring before signing it.

Because the policy already is in effect for this year, Benson said the resolution will deal with enforcing the policy and having better communication between students and the residence department.

“We want to be notified of changes made to the Terms and Conditions,” Benson said. “There was a list of key changes given out to students at the beginning of the year, but this policy wasn’t on it.”

He said he hopes the resolution will require the Department of Residence to give copies of potential changes to hall desks, hall directors and resident assistants.

IRHA Vice President Joe Foster said one intent of the resolution is to rework the way that residence department policy changes are handled.

“We are hoping to have a representative come and talk to the association [in the future] about the potential changes so that we know what is going on,” he said.

Benson said the resolution also will call for a standard method of enforcing the policy. He said this might show the Department of Residence what problems they might have with the policy this year.

Associate Director of Residence Virginia Arthur will be on hand to field questions from IRHA.

The Veishea pledge also will be discussed, but no legislation will be considered.

Jason Shenton, Government of the Student Body senator for USAC, will be attending the meeting to discuss Veishea. IRHA President Dave Sims said Shenton will talk about some changes that might be made to the Veishea pledge.

Sims said if any legislation concerning Veishea is brought up, it will be ruled out of order. He said Veishea bills will not be considered until after ISU President Martin Jischke speaks to IRHA about the celebration.

A date for such a visit has not yet been set.

Tonight’s meeting will be held at 7 in the Wallace-Wilson Conference Room.
