Annual Run for the Roses benefits arthritis research
October 6, 1999
The 13th Annual Run for the Roses, co-sponsored by Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and the Ames Area Running Club, is being held Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Iowa State track near Towers.
“It’s our lucky 13, and we are all really excited about it,” said Michelle Crandall, president of Alpha Omicron Pi, 2007 Greeley St.
Those entering can choose to participate in either a 5K walk/run or a 10K run.
There also is a noncompetitive kids’ “fun-run,” which will be held between the 5K and 10K races.
The sponsors are hoping to get 1,000 participants, which would be 200 more that last year’s event.
As of last Friday, 600 people had already registered to participate in the races.
All revenue from the event will be donated to the Arthritis Research Foundation.
“The Arthritis Research Foundation has been our sorority’s national philanthropy since 1967. At ISU, we have raised around $34,900 for them. Nationally, the sorority has raised over $1 million,” said Barb Taylor, Alpha Omicron Pi member and race director.
Participants will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and a complimentary omelet breakfast prepared by the sorority members.
A red rose will be given to all finishers.
Meaghan Ryan, senior in construction engineering, participated in the race last year and said she’s looking forward to it again this year.
“It’s a bunch of people getting together for a great time. And besides, the omelets are awesome,” she said.
Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers, as well as the top three winners in each of the 12 divisions.
More than 60 door prizes will be given out throughout the morning.
“This is a quality event to all our participants. It’s great way to promote the Ames Running Club and to make money for arthritis research.
“Everyone will be having a good time,” said Taylor, senior in management information systems.
Pre-registration is $18, and registration on the day of the race is $20.
