Cyclone soccer earns Big 12 tournament birth

Despite a loss Sunday to Oklahoma, the the Iowa State women’s soccer team was able to grab a Big 12 Conference tournament birth thanks to a victory Friday over Oklahoma State.
ISU and Oklahoma State were involved in a defensive struggle Friday, as only one goal was scored in the match. Junior Ali Sullivan scored the lone goal in the 50th minute. Fellow junior Krista Odenwald dished out the assist, and Sullivan put it past Cowgirl goalkeeper Katharin Doud to give the Cyclones a 1-0 advantage.
Iowa State outshot the Cowgirls by a margin of 15-8 with Erica Florez leading ISU with four shots.
Senior Hayley Mercer made her second straight start at goalkeeper for ISU, playing all 90 minutes and posting her second straight shutout.
The win put Iowa State’s conference record even at 4-4 and put their overall record at 11-5.
Sunday the Cyclones were involved in another defense minded game, but this time ISU came out on the wrong end as Oklahoma pulled off the 1-0 overtime upset.
The shots were controlled by the Cyclones, as they outshot the Sooners 28-12 for the match. The one goal shot in the overtime period , unfortunately belonged to the Sooners who capatilized for a goal and a win.
In the 99th minute Oklahoma sophomore Jonette Coquat scored and gave the Sooners the win.
Florez took nine shots for ISU. The Cyclones outshot Oklahoma 11-4 in the first half, and 17-7 in the second half. Iowa State also couldn’t capitalize on eight corner kicks.
Mercer made her third straight start for the Cyclones and made two saves and allowed one goal in her 99 minutes of play.
The Cyclones have one conference game remaining this Friday when they square off against Nebraska.
